Republic Roadshow report,
Sheffield 8th April 2006
William Summers
As part of the ongoing “Republic Roadshow” series of events up and down the
country, Sheffield’s impressive Showroom Cinema building played host to
Republic on Saturday 8th April for what turned out to be a rational and
well-mannered debate about the future of the monarchy.
Local coordinator Jeff Cowley organised the event, inviting Republic’s
Campaign Coordinator, Graham Smith, and Local Campaigns Officer, William
Summers, to speak about the campaign and ask the question: “Is it time to put
the Windsors to a vote?”
After an introduction from Mr. Cowley and talks from both of Republic’s
visiting representatives, the Chair then sought the views of the floor. The
presence of a handful of constitutionally aware Charter88 supporters ensured
no stone was left unturned, and it proved to be an engrossing evening for
republicans and non-republicans alike.
“This is what our campaign is all about,” said Graham Smith. “We need to raise
the level of debate about the accountability of the monarchy, and I think we
achieved that tonight. Talking to the public at events such as this is a
two-way process, and I believe we can take some very positive feedback away
from Sheffield.”
William Summers added: “The local group here in Sheffield has been working
really hard to create a presence in the city. We gained several new Republic
supporters tonight so it’s great to know we’re spreading our message in the
Sheffield area.”
Republic has a busy schedule of events ahead, culminating in Republic Day
weekend on June 3rd. To get involved or for more details visit Republic’s
