Cambridge protests save the architecture school

Jim Jepps

Demonstration photo from IndymediaIt has been announced that Cambridge university has backed down from closing down the world famous architecture department after it voiced doubts about its level of research.

This decision was based purely on a financial basis and cut directly across the interests of a decent education system that should reward such exemplary teaching institutions rather than put them into tables and leagues that have little to do with quality and worth.

The protests had been supported by the NUS and included very strong demonstrations (pictured) with high profile names like the implausibly posh Griff Rhys Jones.

This success is very welcome proving that ground level campaigns can be successful and will be welcome news for those in Exeter who are fighting similar proposals.
