Massive march in Rome against Bush

Some estimates range up to 100,000 demonstrators descended on Rome to protest at the visit by George W. Bush.

Although the day was marred by bouts of police repression the enormous crowd proved that the anti-war movement has not gone away in Italy.


Italy has been a key player in the pro-war alliance and, as in Spain and the UK, has seen massive anti-war demonstrations.

The Italian public have been under sustained pressure since the kidnapping of Italians in Iraq to bow to pressure from the right but have refused to do so.


Bush is in Europe for various events celebrating the Second World War and he found himself rebuked over the war by that notorious ultra-leftist the Pope. (here to read that story in the Independent)
